If I had to watch American tv with ads for products like ‘mountain house’… I’d end up killing myself.
High quality!
DONT flip the batteries on any electronic kids, they start some kind of corrosion very fast.
The best pillow and no money is the pillow you will sleep on at home, just take it
This is a good list!
For those who think this isn’t budget enough, it’s true. Fact is, backpacking ain’t really a budget sport. But there are ways. 1. Find used goods; 2. Break into the hike while building up your gear – start w/ day hikes so u won’t yet need half the stuff mentioned here, then go on summer overnight climbs so you won’t have to worry about winter layers & R-value sleep systems yet. The more you get into the hobby, the more you’ll willingly invest in advanced (a.k.a pricier) gear; 3. Join a hiking community, they’d be happy to share or lend you some items until you can buy one such as a bag, tent, cookset, etc.; 4. Explore Decathlon ; 5. If you don’t mind the weight, your existing stuff will do for the timebeing – as Dan had provided some examples, a garbage bag for waterproofing and a dairy queen spoon will work just fine. That goes with all other gear. So far I’ve used a dead branch as a trek pole, my old school backpack as hiking bag, my house slip-ons as camp slippers, sewn fleece blanket as sleeping quilt, a car sunshade/windshield cover as sleeping pad, cooked meals from scratch, and worn a garbage bag as raincoat! Be creative.
No pliers = not a multitool
Don’t buy the klymit static V, except if you’re only gonna buy it for warm summer nights. Their r-value is not conventional, so it’s more between 1 or 2, and not a 4 like they claim
This kind of thing is such useful advice as I get back in to the hobby, I’m a strong fan for any gear-heavy pursuit of "even if you plan to eventually shell out top bucks start with gear at the budget end of the ‘actually usable and not cheap fake crap’ tier," because it’s not like there’s just an easily identifiable "best in slot" option for most things and buying expensive stuff before you know your preferences you might be shelling out for something that’s great for someone else but totally wrong for you, and you’re going to be much better equipped to make those decisions once you have some experience. Good low-middle-budget gear is what will carry you long enough to get the experience it takes to develop those preferences.
Someone please help me understand quilts…..
I found the best Med-kit setup is gauze pads, petroleum jelly, and duct tape wrapped around an old credit card. When you’re hiking, if you need a bandaid, you don’t need a bandaid.. if it’s worse than a bandaid then it won’t work anyway.. just throw some duct tape on it
I’ve used those Fizan trekking poles for about 1300 miles of the AT so far and they’ve been great. I was skeptical because many people had said twist lock poles will slip when you need them most but I have not found that to be the case with these Fizans.
No budget backpack?!
Some of this stuff doesn’t need to be "just for beginners" been backpacking all my life and when I made the switch to lighter weight packs I got the Granite Gear Crown 60. That was 4 years ago and I’m still using that same pack. Normalize sticking to your gear. There’s always this push to buy the next thing. Where are the videos about how long you’ve used your gear? It’s amazing to see the advances in hiking gear but sometimes knowing you’ve used something for a decade feels like you’re more connected to your kit.
Hey Dan, this is Dan. Speaking of shoes. There are so many American brands that we don’t have here en Mexico. Could you make a video of "best trail shoes from mainstream brands"? Like Adidas, North Face, Asics, Salomon…
Facebook Marketplace is absolutely the best used place for camp gear!
❤awesome video as always!!
Anyone have an idea of the end weight on this setup?
I want to recommend it to a friend, but she can’t end up overloaded!!
You can get a backpack from Walmart for less than 100 bucks poor folks can build a bag for a lot less than the prices you are saying
"Use what you already have"
New best budget sleeping pad is Rei’s Helix 4.9R value. Got mine on sale for $118. It’s legit better than anything out there including high end brands! I promise and check them out
I agree with the Stanley Cook Pot, I would also agree of the Zebra Billy Pot (but its a little heavier but still awesome at $19.99 on sale, however for an UltraLight kit I would definitely give it to the Dollar General Store Stainless Steel Straining Grease Pot, its 750ml pot with coffee cup style handle and the top strainer part inserts onto the top by press fit and its tightness is controlled by slightly deforming the pot rim, and can be removed or used as a lid, or used as a steamer/ or baking tray because of its holes, its +’s are its price $, its lighter than the others, but it has a slightly wider footprint than the Stanley Cook Pot so it fits better and is more stable on top of a stove or in the fire. its -‘s is its slightly thinner SS material, but will still last many yrs. of use.
How do u buy paria in eu
I don’t mind the slightly higher sodium in the MH meals, good for your electrolytes after a long sweaty hike to help keep your body hydrated.
The best budget GPS is a map and compass
Don’t use frog toggs cheap garbage, it’s is… garbages just buy some on sale whatever… REI, etc
Another budget excellent one is North Face Stormbreak 1 person tent 3lbs under for $100 bucks! Very very legit!
Your an absolutely money saving life saver thank you
‘Prerequisite’ – wrong word. Try ‘caveat’?
I just wanna say don’t buy a cheap cheap stuff. Just buy what you gonna like it and love it and what’s gonna makes you happy. Expensive store always have a good sales on quality stuff ( Black Friday)
Just safe your money on coffee, cigarettes, beer, fast food, etc. Love your self and respect others ✊⛺️🌲🔥
Love my Big Agnes Air Core Ultra. Cost 80 bucks on sale for the LW version, and quite frankly it’s unbeatable at that price!
The Energizer headlamp is the worst I’ve ever used. Just buy an older version of Petzl you’ll he happier and it’ll only add $5-$10
When I read the word " budget " I thought it’d be something around $300 tops. Bro I got my entire setup for like $120. $20 -5°C sleeping bag , some random $4 yoga mat, my school backpack ( which is actually a 27L hiking backpack from Fila but I used it for school for 2 years and here I am 2 years after school still using it and it’s like I first bought it ) I think it was like $25 something like that. Fero rod $3. Off-brand lighters ( got a 10 pack for $1 ). A box of matches for 10 cents. First aid kit ( I built over time from house supplies like bandages , ointments , gels , painkillers,… ). I got 30m of cordage for $4 , I then cut it in 3. A poncho for $10. A jacket of mine . A 1.5L bottle of water from the supermarket. A foldable ambrella that is 6 years old and works like a charm. A tarp for I think $20. A hammock for $15. And finally for lighting i got myself a headlamp for $11 from Decathlon. And some freeze-dried food from my local camping store. I actually very recently bought a 50l forclaz backpack for $52 but I bought it just to upgrade so I could carry more stuff. So far it’s quite comfortable and it’s been treating me well.
Mountain house – for all your nutritional needs… particularly those on low potassium diets.🦈™
Ozark trial (Walmart) makes a great camp slipper for cheap
Ive been planning to get the majority of my new gear from paria this year, all of it seems nice and legit, thouhh im debating just using my synthetic bag thats -20, but obviously takes up space
What is an R value?
Best budget backpacking app is alltrails at the low low cost of free. LOL
Best budget pillow: pack your clothes into a sack and use it as a pillow
you can stop with the OT spoon. its now 8$
I need a sleeping bag under £70. Any ideas
Nebo makes some great headlights, like the NEBO MYCRO lineup. The 400 is $15.00 and does have red and green plus four other levels of brightness. The 500 comes in at $24.00 and also has a large cob that surrounds the spot. The cob is great for a broad coverage light source. I have a Nebo slide that I have used a lot over the past 6 years and it is still going strong. For an affordable and very fine multi-tool you cannot beat the Rocktool 22-in-1 for $35. It even comes with a built in ferro rod. Very fine quality.
What is the boots on your miniature? 🤔🌲🌲🌲
Granite gear still best choice for ultralight bags for me, Klymit customer service is worst in my country.
how is this budget
guys just make more money and get a katabatic and an ether pad and montbel puffy. It’s not that hard just radically change your life and get a job that pays more and if you have more than one kid just pick the best one and only feed that one and take that extra money and get an Xmid Pro. Not rocket science
Where can I purchase that Decathlon Trek Puffy Jacket for $100. I really want that. Thanks
when everything on this list isnt budget for you 😔
Duuuuude the trash bag is GOAT. Served all over for 4 years. Got out and what did I use for camping, saddle bags, walking around town? ZIPLOCK and TRASHBAGS
22:12 diddy?
The amount of times people suggest trash bags for a liner but never say to avoid scented bags is beyond me.
Best budget GPS would be your phone in airplane mode.
