Cheap Backpacking Rain Cover #SHORTS
Backpacking Rain Covers are nice to have but they are not cheap. For a cheap alternative to expensive backpacking rain covers use a contractor trash bag. Some people like to put these on the inside but that can still get your pack soaking wet, making it heavy and it can take a long time to dry out. To protect your pack in the rain use a contractor trash bag. You can even cut slits in the bag to access your shoulder straps so you can keep hiking while wearing your pack and keeping it dry. Just one more cheap alternative to expensive backpacking gear.

A rucksack cover costs next to nothing 😂
DON’T FORGET THE LINER, TOO !
On AliExpress it’s 1$
All of my rain gear is garbage bags.
you can just say trash bag.
Why dont they just make the cover a part of the backpacks material?
I would not even like to be found dead with a trash bag on my backpack.
Sharpen your knife
Use a spray bottle filled with something like Thompsons Water Seal and spray your packs, Tents, etc.
It’ll last for years before needing to use it again
I like cheap, light and functional..my pack is an old 50kg malting grain polyfibre bag. I attached two straps, a hip belt and lumbar roll from pipe isulation material. Cost $20, weighs 450gms/1 lb, good for 100 hikes/tramps up to 6 days so far. 3 years old.
Get a sewing machine.
Rain cover are cheap if you buy it from like aliexpress etc
Hey Ol’boy, Cliff Grey has some great videos on knife sharpening.
Looks like it’d help you 😅
I have a waterproof pack and poncho that covers my backpack
I use garbage bag and keep mine in the bag. I have a rain cover that came with the bag when I bought it. Between the two nothing ever gets wet hardly. Definitely nothing in the bag gets wet…. My bag cover is built into my backpack at the bottom.
Box of contractor bags…$22-35 and weight 5 oz each.
Osprey pack cover $19, 3.8 oz.
What was the point of this video?
What works really well, and is a bit more durable are tire covers, the kind you put on an external tire like Jeeps tend to have. They are also waterproof, you put it over the pack part, leaving the frame out the back. I first used them in the military, where they would use camo tire covers that matched the camo on the packs.
I like to waterproof the bag, and my rain jacket fits over me and my bag. I also carry at least one or two extra bags as well. But the main thing I do if it rains is put up a tarp and hammock and rest and cook. Florida camper so rain ☔ isn’t a joke here. I would say in most of the southeast rain and hypothermia are no joke at 30°-50° with wind 30-50mph.
They are cheap you a clown or something
Legitimate question, what’s the backpack is completely saturated though, isn’t it play 15 lb heavier? What is the few ounces more for a pack cover make the backpack overall still lighter in rain?
This is a good practical tip. Or you can go to REI and spend as much on a rain cover for your pack as you did on the pack. 😅
Pardon me for Goodness sake, this is like the three hundredth trash compactor bag video. Please come up with some original content.
You’re an incredible human, thank you for what you do! ❤
All of this gearification of going outside is such a load of rubbish.
I thought you stopped carrying a knife when you hike.
Very clever!
Contractor Bag*
Takes way too long to unfold it, doesn’t fit snuggly and 20€ for a professional raincover ain’t that much.
Or just use your poncho. Just make sure, that you buy one that’s big enough or especially suited for also carrying a backpack underneath.
Couple years late here, but drum liners are way lighter than thick contractor bags, and will work just as well
Learned that in the Boy Scouts 40 years ago. Durp.
It’s called a tarp.
Yeah, right. Let’s spend £1500-2000 on my pack and not get a decent cover
My poncho covers my pack. Also has crommits to use as a tarp. It was pricey. This is a cheap quick fix. I always carry a large trash bag on the bottom of my pack anyway. Stops gear from soaking up ground water.
I’ve done this trick several times, works like a charm
Used to do this on bike rides through rainy Philly days
Many just have one built in by the bottom hidden zip
Decathlon hiking rain coat ✨️😊 goes over backpacking 🎒
Leave the trash bag inside your backpack people so that way you’re sleeping bag clothes etc will remain perfectly dry it’s okay to carry around an extra 2 lb of water weight if it means that you’re keeping your clothing and survival equipment dry versus puncturing holes in a otherwise perfectly watertight container if you would like to keep water off of your backpack I suggest an umbrella
Contractor bag…. not compactor bag lol
If they don’t find you handsome, they should find you to be handy.
From the red green show: if she doesn’t find ya handsome, she’ll find ya handy!!
Has an Arc’Teryx pack and said “covers aren’t cheap”! Bhahhahh
I use to use grabage bags as luggage containers for airplane trips. Aadly they dont allow this anymore
Don’t big (40L+), expensive packs like Arcteryx, Gregory, Osprey, North Face, Granite Gear, etc already GIVE you a rain cover? Seems like I got one with my last Gregory pack I bought.
No, you need a poncho for you and your packback

Always buy a pack with one built in!
Yet another reason to carry a knife
Pack covers are incredibly cheap🤷🏻♂️🤦🏻♂️
Just buy one at Decathlon. Xheap and reusable.
