I’ve spent the last six months searching Amazon for backpacking gear that would work for people who want to go on real backpacking trips, who want to trust their gear, without spending a lot of money. I have made three different videos documenting the gear I’ve put to the test, each time trying to improve the quality of the gear. It all started with a simple idea: most backpackers are not interested in spending a small fortune on good backpacking gear. I’ve heard from many people who are frustrated that most YouTubers, myself included, only review super expensive gear. So I gave myself a challenge, to scour Amazon to find a quality backpacking set up, tent, backpack, sleeping bag, mattress, stove, cookpot, headlamp, and more, all for under $500 dollars.
This video highlights the gear that has been the best.

Thermarest makes a mattress with an R value of 6 wide for $140 made in America found it at my local sportsman’s warehouse
Nothing showed the item delivered in India
I found that klymit mattress at Walmart for like $65
At a gathering of close friends, I found that more and more friends began to pay more attention to personality and stories rather than simple brand labels. Inspired by this, I began to explore bags that can reflect personal style without being too expensive, and kisluxs helped me find a bag that suits my taste. This bag is both low-key and cheap, and there is really nothing wrong with it.
Ampex ultralight mattress in LW is running around $60. Anyone have experience in cold weather on one? They claim around an R-5
I don’t see that anyone has mentioned it, but Trekology now has a pad with a claimed R value of 7.2 (I don’t believe that rating), a claimed weight of 1.6 lbs, and a price of $53. I just ordered one to try out.
Gearing up for a long walk and found this entertaining and helpful. I already have everything i think ill need. The thing that caught me by surprise was the weight your average pack. Im currently day two into a little vetting experiment and my pack weighs 25lbs ….. No food and im like damn this weighs a ton. I just turned 42 and feelin every second of it right now so thanks for the motivation.
For those of you who read that not all fakes come from some kid-friendly (don’t want comments to be flagged) companies, you can find some good stuff on kislux that people make themselves, and the replicas these days are getting better and better Excellent, both appearance and quality are very close to the original.
@eric
A few notes (i know im late to the game here, but hope it helps).
I actually worked for klymit when we made the static v. I’m one of the creators. Your recommendation is not actually a static v, its an insulated static v. I can tell you as the designer, this is not a good product. You should get the standard static v. The insulation in that pad does almost nothing to keep you warm, but its heavy and bulky. The standard static v is significantly cheaper, and lighter which is a win win at least for summer use.
Otherwise excellent video
the problem with head lights are you blind everyone in your group
The tent has gone up a lot in such a little time
You have to try the CAMP minima 2 sl tent! At this prices range and weight i find it unbeatable. Maybe shorter than others but can stand some serious wind. Hasn’t let me down so far. Check it out please, I would love to hear your opinion about it
Love the video!! I am 6”1 and have a hard time finding a pack that fits how I like. You think the Rhino pack would fit a taller person? Thanks
I had a pair of wind pants in that color in to 80’s. They matched my Patagonia gators. I hated that color, but it was the 80’s.
I just started hiking after a few years of non nature life since I left the army. Your channel is a great source of gear exposure since I was used to just take what the army gave me.
But since I am not American a metric conversion on screen would be great. 😊
I still have my BRS stove five years and it’s not great but it’s not terrible. It was cheap and super lightweight and it’s still working great. I have the same UCCO grey mug and an actual coffee mug is a must on any trip for me. Even when in traveling for work, i pack a fancy coffee mug in my carry on. My Saturday morning cup of coffee where I’m just relaxing is sacred.
Why would you still promote Amazon and therefore fascism??? It’s all become SO clear, it’s NOT DONE.
Every woman should have the right to make impulse purchases, but a smart woman will easily find that happiness without regrets. That day at kisluxs , I found a bag that suited my temperament very well.
You should do a video where you go through all the gear behind you on the shelves.
kislux included, I firmly assert that unless one possesses the requisite skills, differentiating variations in the sack’s appearance or metallic elements is an unachievable task.
Dont get the static v mattress your sleep is something you dont want to skimp on go with big agnes for comfort but if your really serious go with thermarest xlite you wont be disappointed trust me i have made this mistake myself trying to save money but the sleep pad is one thing i recomend spending the bulk of your money on and you will have a better trip the rest you can get by with just ok or even below average gear most tents now days are fully rainproof so the rest go cheap and spend most of your budget on sleep pad
ATEPA 1-Person Ultralight Backpacking Tent 120$
Pity, how about supporting small stores and makers and telling us how to find this gear WITHOUT amazon ?
Just a heads up to anyone buying the Klymit static V, I’d personally skip it. They are known to have shotty qc, and my first one had a slow leak, which would lead me to have a deflated pad in the morning. Also, if you’re a side sleeper the pad doesn’t have enough thickness to be fully comfortable. Dont cheap out on your pad and bag imo
would be really cool if you could review budget, synthetic sleeping bag/quilts…enjoy your vids !
Have you thought about doing a review on the featherstone backbone ultralight 1 person tent at $160
In fact, when you buy a high-end imitation in kislux and walk on the street, no one will care whether you have a fake or not, so why not?. kislux
By comparing replicas with genuine items, you can learn how to identify the authenticity of a bag. I think kisluxs also has artistic value. This change allowed me to devote more resources to a true art collection while maintaining my own style.
Petzl headlamp is great
Should try the VectoX just for comparison.
Just a detail, is 4 pounds really a heavier tent?? The lightest i use is a Hilleberg Unna, and that´s 4 lb 7 oz… make´s me feel kinda ultralight, -obviously i´m not.
Thank you so much for this video. It was very interesting.
I am 37, work hard, love fashion but I can’t afford luxury. Last year I found out about kisluxs where I bought a real leather Fendigraphy for about ?50 (more than I usually spend)… I love it so much and it makes me feel good… I don’t show off it’s fake but anyone who knows me and knows the prices of Fendi knows it’s not real… Maybe one day I will own a real Fendigraphy but for me I am happy with my fudge
Researching and testing gear will triumph just throwing money at it. Of course if you do throw money at it, you’ll end up with decent gear. But if you really think Patagonia is just charging $300 for a puffer because it’s just that quality and nothing to do with their brand/status tax then you’re delusional.
I used to think that owning a luxury bag was an unattainable dream, until kislux told me that this dream is actually very close. The sense of fashion comes not only from the brand, but also from personal matching and attitude.
If you’re going to buy the featherstone, don’t, spend a few more dollars and get a lanshan. Its just over two pounds, really waterproof, wind resistant, has two options for the inner tent.
Nice review. I was wondering if you have checked out the River Country trekking pole tents? The Pyramid is a one person one pole tent; the Palace is a two person, two pole tent. Both are double wall sil nylon. They weigh around 2.5 to 2.7 lbs for under $150.
Here is a guy I would buy a drink for. Just a down to earth review that is thorough and honest.
You mean sleep pad…
Lol the Featherstone is sold out again
lol I dream of a 4 pound tent!!!!!
Hey Eric! Love all your videos brother. You are a happy addition to my month. I know that you’re 6 foot tall and all your gear fits you pretty well. Have you ever thought or considered making a video with a creator who is big and/or tall? I’m 6’5” and weigh about 265 pounds. I find it near impossible to find shelter and sleep gear that fits me and is lightweight. Thanks for the consideration!
I am an ardent fan of yours and I follow you always for tis and advices. Since I am from the state of Sikkim in India, I do not have the privelage of purchasing several gars that you show. Therefore can you kindly guide us accordingly with what kind of purchases we should do fromAmazon India. Thank you.
I feel like you should really put them to use before you review them. Cuz to me they look brand new. I want to see something that went through hell and still holds strong lol. Maybe that’s just me
Eric, I am overwhelmed.
I love your budget videos and just your energy.
I am looking for a good daypack, under $100, for hikes ranging from 6-12 miles. I will be doing longer hikes as I train and get healthier.
Gregory Nano? Osprey? Or 100 others? What would you recommends.
Thank you my friend. Now, I gotta go check your Patagonia content.
Definitely should check out the Fenix HM61R
I duct taped a black trash bag to my back worked great for a backpack.
If your hiking with big dogs dont go with down. It will get wet LMAO
I bought that exact Teton when I first started backpacking five years ago and didn’t want to spend too much money "to start". Five years later, it’s still going strong and I still absolutely LOVE it. It’s been all over the WCT, ECT, and many more 8-10 day trips! Part of me wants to buy a lighter pack, but I just love the organization, durability and fit of that pack. For reference, I’m 5’3" with "decent hips" lol. It fits really great
Great choices. The CNOC bag is a great idea, but I’ve also had leak problems and decided to move on from the brand. I’ll try the X and see how it goes.
