My Top 3 Hammock & Tarp Setups: Best Setups for Hammock Camping

LINKS BELOW:
Hammock camping is by far my favorite way to sleep well in the woods. Let’s take a look at my top 3 hammock and tarp setups that have worked well for me over time. We will show how to set up a hammock and discuss how to set up a whoopie sling. We will also discuss how to set up a ridgeline and then my 3 favorite hammock camping setups. I will demonstrate using the Hammock Gear Zippered Bug Net Hammock and the DD Superlight Tarp. These are what I believe are the best tarp shelters to use over your hammock.

  1. Hi Matt, I’ve purchased the "Monkey Swing" hammock from Amazon in camouflage colour. It’s a great hammock to start with for a good price, but it doesn’t have a bugs net. Is yours attached to your hammock or is it a separate one? Can I upgrade my monkey swing hammock later with a bugs net to attach over the structural ridgeline for example? Or is it better to buy another hammock in the future for the summer with a bugs net attached? Thank you for your informative video 👍

  2. Nice…thanks for this. The only other thing is the overhead branches need be clear and here in Philippines coconuts😂.

  3. Hey man I’m. New tonyour channel but loved this video thank you so much. I’ll be browsing your other content soon and of course I’ve subscribed 🎉

  4. As has been stated, camping in a hammock keeps you up off from the ground. It also keeps you out of the bugs and vermin that slither around down there. The very best thing….the comfort and good sleep that go with a hammock cannot be overstated. Some may find that hard to believe. I used to be a side sleeper but I have found that I can sleep equally well on my back, side or otherwise in a hammock…..it’s all good. There are a myriad of online resources that can show you how to hang to get the best lay. I sleep every night in a hammock, it’s that good. When I find myself (rarely) in a bed, it’s like sleeping on a plank (sucks). The quality of sleep in a bed is poor at best. Thank you, Matt for showing your preferred ways of flying a tarp. I need to try the third way. Looks to be a keeper. Be well…….

  5. You can attach the whoopie directly to the hammock, substitute an extra ground peg for the wood toggles to save weight. I also use a snakeskin for the tarp roll up and storage, that way I can leave the pegs and tarp lines attached. This lets you enjoy the stars but can quickly deployment if rain starts. It’s also faster and more convenient to pack up in the rain. A wet tarp in a snakeskin is easier to handle than stuffing a wet tarp.
    Thanks for the video.

  6. I like your wind-wedge design. Haven’ t seen that one before.

Why bring toggles when you have all those sticks on the ground?

Staking out from the loops one step in from the corners gives you a hex-type configuration, but with doors for more privacy and wind protection.

  7. I do like the pole in the middle. Actually I’d like it on both sides .
I don’t think my trecking poles are long enough . But I’m going to practice. Oh i wear my head lamp around my neck at night . That way I know exactly wear it is ,my camping hack .

  8. what i just have learn is it was big mistake myself to think about replace to tent by hammock!

  9. Wow Matt… great to see this video… you really know your stuff…. Thanks so much 👏🏽

  10. Aww man this is amazing. I’m thinking about getting into hammock and tarp camping rather than use my tent. My mate already has a hammock and tarp and he loves it. This video has been brilliant and has provided an abundance of great tips. Thanks so much man. Subscribed. Peace and love from Bonnie Scotland 🏴󠁧󠁢󠁳󠁣󠁴󠁿⛺️

  11. Hi, I don’t own a Hammock yet.
One concern I have is, it would seem that the rain could run down the Hammock end ropes and wet the Hammock from either end.
Does this happen or do the Carabiner block the waters progress down to the Hammock?
    Thanks, Dieter

  12. Your ridge line for tarp should be on top of your tarp not under tarp … Just use 1 inch straps better for trees and alot faster to put up an take down For me just strap and carabinier only for hammock just loop for tree and thru biner tie bunny ear that’s it 15ft staps …The mule tape or other small stuff should not be use on tree ..

  13. Thank You. It means so much too me that you really take your time to Fully explain things. I will spread the word too. ❤

  14. Thank You, Matt, for such an excellent video on this subject of great interest to me. I’m aboard with Notifications on and wil be checking out your links. warm regards from Oregon. .. Mike.

  15. You had me at "Red Head"….. I also do "blue is shoe", and on a lady friends touring bicycle…. "Red is right" with red electrical tape on her right side of her handlebars and green/yellow tape "left is lellow/ green is gauche (french for left)

  16. New to this, but now I wish I had watched this video earlier. Matt, your experience is showing… thank you for sharing so clearly! Adjusting my setup to include some of your great ideas.

  17. As soon as I saw what he was using for “straps” I stopped watching. Not only is this unhealthy for the tree, it can also cause injury to inexperienced people.

  19. Loved your video. Lots of good info for folks new to hammock camping with tarps or who started with lots of hardware (me 🤫)

I use knots, soft shackles and toggles for everything. Beckett hitch for hammock to strap connection (no whoopee slings), truckers hitch for tarp ridge line. Soft shackles on the hammock tree straps allow quick attachment to trees and allows repositioning even if there is a branch preventing sliding the straps up or down which is the case when you run the free end of the straps through a fixed loop. Toggles for the ridge line connection to the trees and tarp to ridge line. Toggles are so handy but I don’t carry premade toggles, sticks are everywhere. Also prussics on the hammock ridge line allow you to keep ridge line organizers in one place so they don’t slide to the lowest point (usually in your face).

  20. Am i right in thinking that if I pitch this wrongly I’m creating a wind tunnel? What happens as the winds change ?

  21. Any tips or videos on how to mitigate rain drip as it travels down your ridgeline or hammock suspension?

  22. Experienced hammock users consider Muletape too narrow as a tree strap. It’s likely to damage the tree bark. At least 25mm will ensure that you can leave no trace. Good luck with your hammocking journey.

  23. I came up with my own way to attach my whoopies to the strap. I borrowed from Rock Climbing/Slacklineing techniques. It’s called a Line-Locker, and is used to connect 2 pieces of webbing without knots. If interested I do feature it on my channel.

  24. 1st step should be to make sure the trees you’re using haven’t been eaten inside by ants. The tree may collapse, and your blissful nap will end with you getting killed or injured.
    Still, good video.

  25. Great video. One other tip: if you are dealing with driving rain, tie the tarp ridgeline BELOW the hammock suspension. You lose headroom but eliminate much of the rain access.

  26. I’d never use a ridge line under the tarp material. It invites leaks in heavy rain. Just use the tarp itself. Just my opinion. I do however like the light dyneema line

  27. A very important point that you didn’t mention about the whoopy sling is that you need to milk it or Take the slack out of it because otherwise the hammock will slip in the night.
